Happy Solstice! Girl Scout Troop 41555 Puts on Summer Carnival
Petting zoos. Karaoke booths. Katy Perry in person. The Junior Girl Scouts in Troop 41555 from Sammamish, WA., were no strangers to thinking BIG. Volunteering throughout the school year at the YWCA Family Village Issaquah, the girls worked over a few months to put together a Carnival over solstice weekend for the youth at FVI to celebrate the end of the school year.
“The girls did most of the planning and created the activities for the carnival all by themselves,” said Karen Latimer, the Troop Leader of 41555. “Even though they can use these hours to help them earn a badge, it’s not the girls’ main motivation. They really wanted to do it for the kids.”
Part of the YWCA’s mission is to empower women, and Troop 41555 embodied the YWCA spirit by empowering themselves to take charge and make the Carnival happen. Katy Perry wasn’t able to make an appearance this year (maybe next time!); however, the youth in the community enjoyed themselves by participating in the many different Carnival games and activities. These included: Ring Toss, Rubber Duck Pick-Up, a bouncy house, arts & crafts, BBQ, movie, and more!
What a great day! Thank you to Troop 41555 for putting on a great celebration for YWCA youth, and to the staff at FVI for helping the girls accomplish their vision for the community!
