Mother-Daughter Team Spread Birthday Cheer at Family Village Issaquah
When twelve-year-old Abby wanted to give back to the community, reach out to other kids, and volunteer in a fun and meaningful way, her mother Susan knew just the place: YWCA Family Village Issaquah. This mother-daughter team brings bags of blessings each month to the youth who live here with their “birthday-in-a-bag” volunteer project.

What is a birthday-in-a-bag? It’s a gift bag that contains everything needed for a great birthday party! Abby uses her allowance to purchase items for the bags; then she and her mom decorate and arrange enough for the children with birthdays that month and deliver them to Family Village Issaquah.
This creative volunteer project has taught Abby many new things. She started by putting the birthday items in a box, but figured out that a gift bag was more cost-effective and festive. She’s learned how to shop on a budget and maximize her dollars to create a fun-filled bag that sparks joy and gratitude in the parents who receive a bag for their children.
Every child deserves the joy of being recognized and celebrated on their birthday. This simple gesture boosts self-esteem, enhances self-worth, and strengthens family bonds.
Through their example, Abby and Susan inspire others to make a positive impact. By helping families celebrate their children’s birthdays, this dynamic mother-daughter team helps build awareness, compassion, and a caring spirit toward toward the residents at Family Village Issaquah.
What goes into a birthday-in-a-bag? Non-perishable cake mix and frosting, foil cake pan, cake decorations, candles, balloons, plates, napkins. Additional items include: birthday banner, party invites, wrapping paper and ribbon, crepe paper, party hats, noise makers, small goodie bags items, table cloth, or small unisex toy or present (unwrapped). Dollar stores are great places to shop for party items. You may also enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for return comments on how the birthday-in-a-bag was enjoyed.
